coming up for air
it feels like it’s been a very long hiatus indeed since i last visited this lovely empty editing window. spring has come and gone in toronto, and so have things i’ve been working towards. as an update, i’ve wrapped up with interactive ontario, spent 10 days living on a boat in the british virgin islands, and am now coordinating the beginnings of a mobile research lab here.
the time off was wonderful, to ruminate on all the happenings of the past 2 years and gain just a touch of completely disconnected perspective. there were sunburns, barracudas and manta rays, and plenty of dark&stormy’s. and the nice feeling of rinsing out all the brainjunk that accumulates over time.
and now? well, i’ll be on a panel tomorrow with tonya surman, executive director of the centre for social innovation and nora young, host of spark, at open everything! our talk will be interviewing david humphrey from seneca college’s open source course model around the nature of open- how it works, what it does, why it’s being pursued. *very exciting*
and right, the mobile project. the elevator pitch goes something like this:
The Mobile Experience Innovation Centre is a partnership of industry and academic organizations actively involved in the mobile content and related services, led by the Ontario College of Art & Design. We’re currently operating with a research and prototyping agenda for mobile content and services, design and commercialization in Ontario. MEIC will be a centre for pre-competitive research, knowledge development and knowledge sharing, focusing on the strategic development of mobile experience design and advanced services in Canada.
Focusing on the role of user experience and usability design and the commercialization of advanced mobile and embedded services and content, MEIC will create opportunities for industry-academic and industry-industry linkages and build capacity for excellence in mobile content design.
we’re actively seeking partners for both the current phase of the project as well as subsequent phases – ping if you or someone you know is interested!
oh yeah. i also turned 30… :)

Mobile research lab sounds like fun! It’s clear that’s where all this web-type stuff is going…
I also just joined the “30″ club, though my recent “tropical” vacation was only 3 days and didn’t leave the mainland (Florida) … though much needed; though I could use a few more days of beach.
